What is a Non-Invasive Hemodynamic Monitor?

A Non-Invasive Hemodynamic Monitor test measures the mechanical function of the heart. This is a tool that allows cardiologists to fine tune treatment for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) without having to perform an invasive procedure. The Bio-Z Noninvasive Hemodynamic Monitor is based on thoracic impedance. It sends a small current through the patient's chest to show the difference in the blood in the aorta when the heart is contracting and when it is at rest.  It literally shows how effective the heart is each time it beats.
The digital readouts produced by this monitor allow cardiologists to determine whether or not a patient's blood flow is normal and whether blood vessels coming out of the heart are constricted or normal. This data is used by cardiologists to adjust medication accordingly.

How the test is performed:
Electrodes (small conducting patches) are placed on your chest and attached to a small recording monitor.  Then it sends a small current through the chest wall.  This current measures the function of the heart.

How to prepare for the test:
There is no special preparation for the test.

How the test will feel:
There is no discomfort associated with the test.  Hair may need to be shaved from the chest for electrode placement.
